Jean-Baptiste Alliette, Etteilla ("et-tee-lah") by pseudonym, was a French Occultist in the late 1700s credited for popularizing tarot to the masses.
The Etteilla deck (Grand Jeu de l’Oracle does Dames) was republished in the 1870s, credited to him by G Regamey Delarue, and later became known as Book of Thoth by some as the deck acts as somewhat of a hermetic grimorie on its own.
